Coaching is all about empowering the coachee by using a range of methods, assist them in achieving change. Firstly, coaching is client led as opposed to coach led. Secondly, the coach is there to assist the coachee to achieve the goals which they have set and have in mind.
When coaching a client, coaches use a range of methods for the coachee to be able to focus on their goals. I centre my approach within setting SMART goals.
SMART coaching goals should be:
- SPECIFIC – a goal should be something tangible
- MEASURED – it should be able to be quantified
- AGREEABLE – it must be agreed by and led by the coachee
- REALISTIC – it must be within the coachee’s reach
- TIMED – Short, medium and long term within a set time-frame
How Can Coaching Help Me?
Coaching can help anyone who has made the conscious decision that they wish to change something in their life.
Stages of Change
- Pre-contemplation – Not given it any thought
- Contemplation -The idea is there, but no real plans to start
- Preparation -Getting ready to make a start
- Action – Today is the day I change
- Maintenance – I am keeping it up
- Relapse – Back to old behaviour
Where are you within the stages of change? Sometimes we are aware that there is something within our life that needs changing but it isn’t obvious and it needs some research. But other times, the signs are pretty clear so we can work in a different way. By using a number of different techniques a coach can help the coachee discover what the underlying issue may. Then the coachee can start setting goals.
